It's probably supposed to be the actual Japanese characters but like the people who subbed this saw that it wasn't working and still decided to leave it in...

I'm really glad the culprit didn't immediately confess and actually tried to weasel his way out of that. Like sometimes the culprits in this show confess way too easily

I knew that guy was the murderer from the start, just because of that weird, strange, suspicious encounter he had with Kogoro, from the 1st part of this episode.

This episode ngl was kinda bland, not much to it, as I already knew who the murderer was because they made it really obvious in the beginning... I just don't really emphasize country side episodes too much.. but yea, hopefully next episode is better.
